About the client

Northern Industrial has been a leading supplier of top-quality industrial automation components and repair services for over 38 years. They have been trading online for approximately 15 years under the domain name nicontrols.com.

Their expertise spans across various industrial automation products, including but not limited to PLCs, HMIs, temperature controllers, and variable speed drives from major manufacturers such as Allen Bradley and Yaskawa.

They export to roughly 138 countries per year, spanning South America, China, India, and even Antarctica. The company has offices located in Mexico, Germany, and the UK.

Recently, Northern Industrial was acquired by Radwell Inter, the world’s leading provider of industrial automation surplus, with offices in the UK, Germany, and around 70 branches in the USA.

The Challenge

Northern Industrial had previously been using Magento 1 with an in-house development team. The website was migrated to Magento 2 just before the onset of Covid-19. Unfortunately, during the pandemic, the development team had left, and the need for a new Magento expert arose.

 

Despite the abundance of ecommerce experts, finding a suitable Magento expert team was challenging. Northern Industrial searched for different Magento Solution partners, monitored Upwork and Googled. Eventually, they discovered Magecloud.

When we started, the priority was the issue that brought Northern Industrial to us in the first place: site speed and Varnish. We sorted out the caching setup and tuned server response, which gave the store a faster, steadier foundation to build on.

 

From there, the scope kept growing. We took on Magento speed optimization across the catalogue, which matters a lot when you’re serving roughly 150,000 products. We reworked the checkout to fit how their export and B2B customers actually buy, and we cleaned up analytics so the team could trust the numbers in front of them.

We have tackled many issues, from speed improvements to internationalisation. I do not believe there is anything that we have not done, and since our store is so extensive, with approximately 150,000 products and up to six languages, there is still a lot of work left to do.
