About the client.

Snackcidents is a unique UK-based brand that specializes in edible raw cookie dough, a product inspired by a growing trend in the U.S. Founded in 2017 by two individuals with no prior experience in the food industry, Snackcidents quickly became a beloved treat for customers who sought indulgent, nostalgic flavours. The business idea was born when the founders noticed the popularity of cookie dough in America, particularly through products like Ben & Jerry’s cookie dough ice cream, and realized that nothing similar existed in the UK market.

Initially, the founders envisioned a mail-order cookie company. However, while developing their recipes, they found themselves enjoying the cookie dough before it went into the oven, which sparked the idea to sell raw cookie dough directly as an edible product. Over two years, they fine-tuned their recipe, built a website using a basic Shopify template, and launched their first product line in 2017.

The business started small, operating out of their home. They spent long hours balancing their full-time jobs while baking, packaging, and labeling products by hand during the night. As the demand for their product grew, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, they moved to a dedicated production facility in 2019 and expanded their team. Snackcidents has continued to grow, establishing itself as a leading brand in the edible cookie dough market.

The Challenge.

Snackcidents faced several IT challenges as their business grew. 

  • Initially, they built their Shopify website using a paid theme from an external theme website rather than an official Shopify theme. This decision caused numerous problems, including recurring bugs.
  • Difficulties working with overseas developers – these developers were based in Asia, and communication proved to be difficult due to language barriers and time zone differences, which slowed down progress.

    Requests often took 48 hours to process, and miscommunication led to issues such as incorrect integrations. For example, Snackcidents’ Klaviyo account was mistakenly connected to another business’s Shopify store, causing a pop-up for a horse products company to appear on their website.

  • Another major challenge arose from Snackcidents’ need for a custom bundling solution. As a business that offers a wide variety of flavors, Snackcidents wanted to allow customers to mix and match their own cookie dough bundles.

    However, Shopify’s 100-variant limit posed a significant obstacle, as Snackcidents needed each product to have its own SKU to integrate with their third-party logistics (3PL) provider. The workaround apps available at the time used additional details rather than individual SKUs, which made them incompatible with the 3PL system.

Snackcidents attempted to solve these issues by working with various developers from different countries, including Ukraine and Montenegro. Unfortunately, these developers were either too slow or lacked the necessary expertise to implement the complex solutions required. After several failed attempts, the founders realized they needed a more skilled and reliable partner to help grow their eCommerce operations.

Solution.

MageCloud provided Snackcidents with a series of custom solutions to address their IT challenges and optimize their Shopify store for scalability and performance. The main improvements and solutions included:

Custom Bundling Solution:

One of the key requests from Snackcidents was the development of a custom bundling feature that allowed customers to mix and match flavors while ensuring that each item had its own SKU for integration with their 3PL provider. MageCloud successfully built this solution, overcoming Shopify’s 100-variant limit, which was a critical hurdle for the business.

Website Optimization:

MageCloud identified that several third-party apps were slowing down Snackcidents’ website. By replacing these apps with custom-built features, MageCloud significantly improved the site’s performance and load times, offering customers a faster and smoother experience.

Cart Drawer Customization:

A fully personalized cart drawer was developed by MageCloud. This included advanced features such as a delivery date selector and, at one point, a shipping insurance option. These improvements made it easier for customers to plan their purchases and provided additional convenience during checkout.

Product Detail Page Enhancements:

MageCloud customized the product detail pages (PDP) to enhance the customer shopping experience. These customizations included dynamic delivery messages that informed customers of expected delivery dates, upsell features, video sections, and multiple review sections. All of these features were designed to build trust and increase engagement on product pages.

Collection Page Customization:

The collection page was also given a major overhaul. MageCloud implemented a highly customized collection page layout that displayed different sections and product types in a visually appealing and organized manner, improving the overall user experience.

MageCloud’s team worked closely with Snackcidents to ensure that all customizations were tailored to their specific business needs. Throughout the process, MageCloud’s ability to quickly address and resolve issues was a welcome change from the slower, less skilled developers Snackcidents had worked with previously.

Initially, the new website caused a dip in conversion rates due to its increased complexity. However, with the optimisations in place, Snackcidents’ conversion rate has since stabilized at a strong 3-4%, compared to the 1% they experienced at one point.
